Also in the News… People are not allowed to use Common Sense.

So today's BBC News front page put a spot on eating and calorie intake, and oh boy did that catch my fancy.  You can read the whole thing here. The gist of it goes something like this: Researchers have discovered that if you exercise, then you can eat more than the standard 2000 or 2500 calorie a day diet allowed for every adult on the face of the planet. There are so many things wrong with this... If you are not smart enough to understand that the more you eat the more energy your body creates and then stores, then perhaps you should reap what you sow... Not only that, but the fact that they have developed a standard for every single living sapient, and are only just now realizing that, maybe, just maybe there are factors that dictate the final amount calories needed to comfortably survive in the first world, is just ridiculous. However this is my favorite sentence in the whole thing : 'Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, said it was a "dangerous assumption" to say that adults could safely consume an extra 400 calories a day.' Oh My Days... this is up there with instructing people to dress warmly when it's cold or to drink water when it's hot... Let people learn the hard way, let natural selection have a go at making society a little bit more dynamic and entertaining, and weed out those who require us to put labels like "CAUTION: KNIFE DESIGNED TO BE SHARP." And so ends another day of fail in the news.
